Welcome to Muse English! I am Maya.
And I am Lena. Today we are talking about fashion and style, and how the clothes we wear tell a story about who we are.
That is such a good topic, Lena, because fashion is everywhere. It is in our wardrobe, it is on the street, and it is on our screens every single day.
Exactly. And our wardrobe says a lot about us. Some people have a wardrobe full of bright colours. Other people have a wardrobe with only black, white, and grey.
My wardrobe is mostly simple. I like clothes I can wear again and again. But I also love one or two special pieces that make an outfit feel complete.
That is the secret of good style, I think. Style is not about owning a huge wardrobe. It is about knowing what suits you and wearing it with confidence.
Exactly. Some people think fashion means buying new clothes every week. But real style means your wardrobe works for you. Every piece in your wardrobe should earn its place.
And when you know your own style, shopping gets easier. You stop buying things you never wear, and your wardrobe becomes smaller but better.
Before we go further, let me tell you about something that can help you every single day. The Muse English app gives you new words with photos and pronunciation, this podcast, shadowing stories, quizzes, grammar lessons, and a leaderboard where you can earn points. I love that. Now, back to fashion. Lena, what makes a good outfit? Is it the price, or is it something else?
For me, a good outfit is about balance. A good outfit fits your body, it fits the occasion, and it feels like you. You can wear a simple outfit and still look wonderful.
I agree. I once wore a very simple outfit to a friend's party, just dark trousers and a white shirt, and three people asked me where I bought it. It was the fit that made the outfit work.
Fit is everything. That is why some people visit a tailor. A tailor can change a jacket, shorten a pair of trousers, or take in a dress so it fits perfectly.
Yes! A good tailor is worth every penny. If a tailor adjusts your clothes, even a cheap jacket can look expensive. A tailor understands how fabric falls on the body.
Fabric is so important. The fabric of a piece of clothing decides how it feels, how it moves, and how long it lasts. A soft cotton fabric feels very different from a stiff fabric.
And a good tailor always looks at the fabric first. If the fabric is beautiful, the tailor can make something beautiful. If the fabric is poor, even the best tailor will struggle.
That reminds me of vintage clothes. Do you like vintage fashion, Maya?
I love vintage fashion. A vintage jacket or a vintage dress has history. When you wear a vintage piece, you wear something no one else has.
Vintage shopping is also good for the planet, because you reuse clothes instead of buying new ones. I found a vintage coat last year, and it is still my favourite coat.
A vintage piece can change a whole outfit. You can wear a modern outfit, add one vintage bag or one vintage scarf, and suddenly the outfit looks special.
Speaking of shopping, where do you like to shop? Big stores, or small shops?
I love a small boutique. A boutique usually has fewer clothes, but the clothes are chosen with care. In a boutique, the owner often knows the story behind every piece.
A boutique is also a nice place to ask for advice. In a big store, nobody helps you. In a boutique, someone will tell you honestly if an outfit suits you.
True. I bought my favourite dress in a tiny boutique in the old part of the city. The woman in the boutique helped me choose the right size and the right colour.
That is the difference. In a boutique, you get time and attention. The owner of a boutique often knows which fabric will suit you, and which colour will suit your skin.
And a boutique often carries pieces you will not find anywhere else. When you buy in a boutique, you buy something a little bit special.
I also love that a boutique can feel like a community. You go back, the owner remembers you, and she remembers what you liked last time. A boutique is shopping with a human touch.
Let me ask you this, Lena. When you walk into a boutique, what do you look at first, the colour or the fabric?
The fabric, always. If the fabric feels cheap, I put the piece back, no matter how pretty it looks. Good fabric is the foundation of good fashion.
I am the same. I touch the fabric first. A beautiful fabric makes even a simple outfit look expensive, and a poor fabric ruins even a lovely design.
And a tailor will tell you the same thing. A tailor works with fabric every day, and a tailor knows that fabric decides how a piece of clothing moves and falls.

Let us talk about something very special now: bespoke clothes. Lena, have you ever worn anything bespoke?
I have never owned a bespoke suit, but I would love one. Bespoke means the clothes are made only for you. A bespoke suit is cut to your exact body.
Exactly. Bespoke is the opposite of fast fashion. With bespoke clothes, a tailor takes your measurements, you choose the fabric, and every detail is yours.
A bespoke jacket fits like nothing else. A bespoke piece can last for many years, because it is made with care and with good fabric.
Bespoke clothes are expensive, but many people say a bespoke suit is an investment. You wear it for years, and it always looks perfect.
Now, what about the runway? The runway is where fashion designers show their wildest ideas.
I love watching runway shows. On the runway, you see colours and shapes that you never see on the street. The runway is fashion as art.
The runway can feel far from real life, but the runway still shapes what we wear. A colour from the runway appears in shops a few months later. A shape from the runway becomes a shape we all wear.
And models on the runway walk with such confidence. The runway is a stage, and every outfit on the runway tells a story.
Let us talk about the small things now: accessories. An accessory can change everything.
Yes! An accessory is a small item, like a scarf, a belt, a hat, or a necklace. One good accessory can turn a plain outfit into a stylish outfit.
I always say: if you are not sure what to wear, add one strong accessory. A bright scarf is an accessory that brings colour to a dark outfit. A simple necklace is an accessory that makes a dress feel elegant.
And an accessory is often cheaper than new clothes. If your wardrobe feels boring, do not buy ten new things. Buy one beautiful accessory instead.
That is a great tip for fashion on a budget. You do not need a big wardrobe to look good. You need a few pieces that fit well, and one or two accessories that you love.
And vintage shops are perfect for a small budget. A vintage piece costs less than a new one, and it often has better fabric and better quality.
True. Fashion on a budget is really about choices. Choose a good outfit, take care of your wardrobe, and let one strong accessory do the work.
Our last word today is silhouette. The silhouette is the outline, the shape of a person or a piece of clothing.
A good silhouette is so important. A long coat gives a tall, elegant silhouette. A wide skirt gives a soft, round silhouette.
Designers think about the silhouette all the time. On the runway, the silhouette tells you if a collection is modern or classic, soft or sharp.
And your silhouette changes with your outfit. A fitted jacket gives a neat silhouette. A loose dress gives a relaxed silhouette. Fashion is really about choosing the silhouette you like.
So let us look back at our words today. Your wardrobe holds your clothes. A tailor helps your clothes fit. A vintage piece has history. An outfit is what you wear together. The runway shows new ideas. A boutique is a small, careful shop. Fabric is the cloth. Bespoke means made only for you. An accessory completes your look. And the silhouette is the shape.
Beautiful summary, Lena. And remember, fashion is not about spending a lot of money. It is about knowing your wardrobe, choosing a good outfit, and wearing it with confidence.

Listen and repeat along with the audio. Full shadowing practice is in the app: repeat each sentence and see how many of its words the app recognised.
Sara looked at her wardrobe and felt bored.
Her wardrobe was full, but nothing felt right.
She wanted a new outfit for the party.
Shadow every sentence in the Muse English app. It listens and shows how many of the words it recognised.
In the active voice, the subject does the action. In the passive voice, the subject **receives** the action. We form the passive with a form of **be** + the past participle. The tense comes from **be**, so the passive works in every tense. Use the passive when the action matters more than the person who did it. News about a **runway** show or a new **boutique** often uses the passive for this reason. We can also use a passive infinitive: **to be** + past participle. It follows verbs like *want*, *need*, and *expect*. A passive infinitive keeps the passive meaning inside a longer sentence.
