Maya

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Word Kitchen. I am Maya.

Lena

And I am Lena. Today we talk about sports and playtime. Maya, do you like sports?

Maya

I love sports. I run every morning. I run in the park near my house.

Lena

That is great. I cannot run fast, but I like to walk. Do you run alone?

Maya

Sometimes I run with my friend Tom. We run and talk. Running is a happy time for me.

Lena

I want to run like you one day. Do you play any games too?

Maya

Yes, I love to play. I play basketball on Saturdays. Do you play, Lena?

Lena

I love to play. I play basketball with my brother. We play after work every day.

Maya

That sounds like fun. Is your brother good at the game?

Lena

He is very good. The game is easy for him. The game is hard for me.

Maya

Haha. The best part is to play together. Do you play with a ball?

Lena

Yes, of course. We have a red ball. The ball is old but good. Sometimes the ball goes over the fence.

Maya

Oh no. Does your brother get the ball back?

Lena

Yes, he jumps and gets the ball. He wants to win every game.

Maya

I understand. I also want to win when I play a game. Do you win often?

Lena

Not often. My brother can run faster than me, so he can win the race to the ball.

Maya

But you are learning. Every time you play, you get better. One day you will win.

Lena

I hope so. I want to win one game this month. I will practice every day.

Maya

Practice is good. When I run in the morning, I feel strong. Do you want to run with me one day?

Lena

Maybe on Sunday. But I will not run fast. We can run slow and talk.

Maya

That is perfect. Slow is fine. The important thing is to play and have fun.

Lena

You are right. A game does not always need a winner. But a small win feels good.

Maya

Yes, it does. When you win, you smile all day. When I finish my run, I smile too.

Lena

Let me tell you about last Saturday. We had a big game in the park. Many friends came to play.

Maya

Nice. Did you have a good ball for the game?

Lena

Yes, a new ball. The ball was white and blue. Everyone wanted to touch the ball.

Maya

And did your team win the game?

Lena

We did not win, but we laughed a lot. To play with friends is better than to win alone.

Maya

That is so true. Sport is about friends, not just the win.

Lena

Exactly. After the game, we sat on the grass. We were tired. My legs hurt from the long run.

Maya

Haha, running is hard work. But you did it. Next time, maybe you will win.

Lena

Maybe. If I run every morning like you, I will be faster and I can win.

Maya

That is the spirit. Keep running, keep playing, and enjoy every game you play.

Lena

Thanks, Maya. Sports time is the best time. Let us play again next week.

Maya

Yes. And to everyone listening, find a ball, find a friend, and play today. Bye, everyone.

Lena

Bye, everyone. Keep running, keep playing, and enjoy the game.

Maya

Lena, what about food? When I run in the morning, I eat a big breakfast after.

Lena

Me too. After I play a game with my brother, I drink a lot of water.

Maya

Good idea. Water is the best drink after a run. Do you eat fruit before you play?

Lena

Yes, a banana. A banana gives me power. Then I can run faster and play longer.

Maya

Smart. What is your favorite game of all time?

Lena

Oh, that is hard. I love basketball, but I also love football. A football game is long, but the ball is fun to kick.

Maya

I agree. A football game with friends on a sunny day is the best. Do you want to play football this Sunday?

Lena

Yes. We can play in the park. I will bring the ball. You bring water. And we can run a little first.

Maya

Perfect plan. We will run, then play, and maybe our team will win.

Lena

If we play well, we can win. But even if we do not win, we will have fun.

Maya

That is the right way to think. A game is a game. The win is a bonus.

Lena

Exactly. So, friends, remember our five words today. Run, ball, game, win, play.

Maya

Say them with us. Run. Ball. Game. Win. Play. Great.

Lena

Use them every day. Run in the morning. Play a game with friends. Throw a ball. Try to win, but smile always.

Maya

That was a lovely sports day. Thanks for listening to Word Kitchen.

Lena

See you tomorrow, everyone. Bye.

πŸ“Grammar: Second conditional β€” talking about dreams

We use the second conditional for dreams and wishes. They are not real now. Form: **If** + past simple, **would** + verb. I run every day. If I ran in the morning, I would feel great. After **If I**, we often use **were**: If I were rich, I would buy a big ball. First conditional is for real plans: **If I play well, I will win**. Second is for dreams: **If I played in a big game, I would win**.
