Maya

Welcome back to Word Kitchen! I'm Maya.

Lena

And I'm Lena. Hi, everyone! Today we are talking about school life, because today's five words are all about learning: teacher, student, lesson, homework, and exam.

Maya

That's right! And I want to start with the word teacher. A teacher is a person who helps you learn at school. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Allen. She was so kind.

Lena

Oh, I remember my first English teacher! A good teacher makes every lesson easy to understand. My teacher always smiled and said hello to each student.

Maya

Yes! And when a teacher explains things slowly, every student can follow the lesson. My teacher used funny stories, and the whole class laughed.

Lena

I love that. Now, the second word is student. A student is a person who learns at school or in a class. Are you a student, or do you know a student?

Maya

I was a student for many years! Every student needs a good teacher. And when the student does the homework, the teacher is happy.

Lena

Ha! True. A student also needs good friends at school. My best friend was a student in my class, and we did our homework together after every lesson.

Maya

Perfect. So our third word is lesson. A lesson is one short class, one time of learning. We have a new English lesson every morning here on Word Kitchen.

Lena

Every lesson teaches something new. In one lesson, the teacher shows new words. Then the student practices them. After the lesson, there is homework!

Maya

Exactly! A lesson can be thirty minutes or one hour. I like a lesson that starts with a song. It helps every student relax before the hard work.

Lena

Oh, songs are great! Our fourth word is homework. Homework is school work you do at home. I finish my homework after dinner.

Maya

Same here! I always did my homework at the kitchen table. When the teacher gives homework, the student must do it before the next lesson.

Lena

And homework helps you remember the lesson. If the student skips the homework, the exam becomes very hard!

Maya

That's a great point! Our fifth word is exam. An exam is a test at school. We have a big exam on Friday.

Lena

Exams can be scary, but they are not bad. An exam shows the teacher what each student learned. After the exam, the student knows what to study next.

Maya

Right! To do well on an exam, the student should listen in every lesson and finish the homework every day. A good teacher helps the student feel ready for the exam.

Lena

Let's review our five words one more time. A teacher is the person who teaches you. A student is the person who learns. A lesson is one class. Homework is the work you do at home. And an exam is a test at school.

Maya

Great review! Now, let me ask you, Lena. Did you like your teacher at school?

Lena

I did! My teacher was funny and kind. She made every lesson fun. What about you, Maya? Were you a good student?

Maya

I tried to be! I was a student who loved books. I did my homework on time, but I was always nervous before an exam.

Lena

Me too! Before an exam, I studied all evening. I read my notes after dinner, and I asked my teacher for help when I did not understand the lesson.

Maya

That's the best way. A smart student asks the teacher questions. And a kind teacher always answers. That's how the student grows lesson by lesson.

Lena

Wait, Maya, can I ask you something? What is the difference between a lesson and homework?

Maya

Good question! A lesson happens at school with the teacher. Homework happens at home, after the lesson.

Lena

So in the lesson, the student learns new things. And with homework, the student practices at home?

Maya

Exactly. The teacher teaches the lesson, and the student does the homework. Both help the student get ready for the exam.

Lena

I love that: lesson by lesson. So, dear listeners, use these words today. Talk about your teacher. Think about one student you know. Remember your favorite lesson.

Maya

Do your homework tonight. And don't be afraid of the next exam. Every exam is a chance to show what you learned.

Lena

Thanks for listening to Word Kitchen! I'm Lena.

Maya

And I'm Maya. See you next time. Bye, everyone!

πŸ“Grammar: Choosing between gerunds and infinitives

A gerund is **verb + ing**. It looks like a verb, but it works like a noun in the sentence. Use the gerund **after some verbs**. The most important ones are enjoy, like, love, hate, finish, stop, keep, and mind. When the teacher gives homework, the student must finish doing it before the next lesson. Also use the gerund **after prepositions** like at, of, about, for, and in. Many students are good at reading, and their teacher is happy. An infinitive is **to + verb**. Use it **after adjectives** like easy, hard, good, and nice. Every lesson feels easy when the student listens well. Use the
