Maya

Welcome back to Word Kitchen, friends. I'm Maya.

Lena

And I'm Lena. Today we are walking through a city, Maya. Just a normal, busy city.

Maya

Yes. A city full of places we use every day. Like the library.

Lena

The library! I love the library. I go to the library near my home almost every week.

Maya

Really? Every week?

Lena

Yes. The library is free, and I can borrow books. Last month I borrowed four books from the library.

Maya

Four books in one month! That is a lot of reading.

Lena

I know. My favorite book from the library was a travel book. Oh, and I should return it to the library tomorrow.

Maya

Wait, do you go to the library in the morning or after work?

Lena

Usually after work, around six. What about you? Do you use the library?

Maya

Not much. But I love the museum. The museum downtown is my favorite place in the whole city.

Lena

The museum? The big one with the old cars?

Maya

Yes! I went to the museum last Sunday. I spent three hours in the museum.

Lena

Three hours? Wow.

Maya

There are old cars, old clothes, and even dinosaur bones in the museum. And on the first Sunday of every month, the museum is free.

Lena

Free museum! Then I will go to the museum with you next time.

Maya

Good. After the museum we can go to lunch. I know a great restaurant near the museum.

Lena

A restaurant! Perfect. Is it expensive?

Maya

No, it is a small restaurant, and the food is cheap and fresh. I eat at that restaurant about twice a month.

Lena

Twice a month at the same restaurant. You must love it.

Maya

I do. The restaurant is run by an old Italian family. Their soup is the best. Last time I was at the restaurant, I tried their new pasta.

Lena

Now I am hungry. But you know what I do after lunch at a restaurant? I always go to a cafe.

Maya

A cafe! For coffee?

Lena

Exactly. There is a small cafe across from the restaurant. I go to that cafe almost every day.

Maya

Every day! That is a lot of coffee.

Lena

Just one small coffee. The cafe is quiet, and I read my library books there. It is my happy place, that little cafe.

Maya

That sounds lovely. A book from the library and a coffee from the cafe.

Lena

Perfect afternoon. But Maya, on my way home I always stop at the pharmacy.

Maya

The pharmacy? Are you sick?

Lena

No, no. The pharmacy near my house sells more than medicine. I buy soap, shampoo, and sometimes chocolate at the pharmacy.

Maya

Chocolate at the pharmacy? That is funny.

Lena

I know! But the pharmacy on our street is open very late, until midnight. So if I need something at night, I run to the pharmacy.

Maya

That is useful. My pharmacy closes at eight, which is too early.

Lena

You should try my pharmacy. The people at the pharmacy are very friendly too.

Maya

Maybe I will. You know, Lena, I have one more question about the museum.

Lena

Go ahead.

Maya

You said the museum downtown is your favorite place. But I never asked, which room in the museum do you like best?

Lena

Oh, the old car room, of course. The museum has cars from one hundred years ago, and one of them still smells like old leather. I stood in front of it for twenty minutes.

Maya

Twenty minutes! Next time I go to the museum, I will stand there with you.

Maya

Hmm, maybe. So let me think about your whole day, Lena. Library, museum, restaurant, cafe, pharmacy. You really use the whole city!

Lena

I do! And you know, each place has its own rhythm. The library is quiet in the morning. The museum is busy on weekends. The restaurant is full at lunch. The cafe is calm in the afternoon. And the pharmacy is a lifesaver at night.

Maya

Well said. Friends, that is our city walk for today. Try to use these five places this week. Visit the library, walk through a museum, eat at a new restaurant, sit in a cafe, and remember where your nearest pharmacy is.

Lena

And come back tomorrow for more Word Kitchen. Bye!

πŸ“Grammar: Modals of deduction - might, can't, must

We use **might**, **can't**, and **must** to guess about now. They help us say what we think is true. Use **must** when you are almost sure. The library **must** be open. I see many people inside. Use **can't** when you are almost sure it is NOT true. She **can't** be at the museum. It is closed today. Use **might** when you are not sure. The restaurant **might** be full. It is Saturday night. After **might**, **can't**, and **must**, use the verb without to. He works at the pharmacy, so he **must be** tired.
