Maya

Welcome to Word Kitchen, the show where we cook up English words. I am Maya.

Lena

And I am Lena. Today's menu is feelings and character. We have ten words for you, and we will use every word many times, so you will really remember them.

Maya

Our first word is happy. Happy means feeling good and smiling. I feel happy when I see my friends.

Lena

I am happy too. Happy is a feeling we all love. Are you happy today?

Maya

Yes, very happy. Now, sad is the opposite of happy. Sad means feeling bad, like you want to cry.

Lena

The sad story made me cry. When people lose something, they feel sad. Do you remember the sad word?

Maya

Happy and sad are the basic moods. Speaking of which, our next word is kind. A kind person is good and helpful to other people.

Lena

She is kind to every animal. Kind people help their neighbors. A kind word can make a sad person happy.

Maya

I love kind people. Now brave. Brave means not afraid to do something hard. The brave boy saved the dog.

Lena

That brave boy was not afraid. Being brave does not mean you feel no fear. It means you act anyway.

Maya

Brave firefighters save lives. It is brave to try something new. Are you brave, Lena?

Lena

Sometimes. When I am shy, I need to be brave. Shy means afraid to talk to new people. He is too shy to sing on stage.

Maya

Many children feel shy at school. If you are shy, it is hard to meet new friends. A friendly smile helps shy people relax.

Lena

Our next word is proud. Proud means happy because you or someone did something good. I am proud of my mother.

Maya

Parents feel proud when their children work hard. A proud smile is beautiful. Do you feel proud when you learn new words?

Lena

Yes, I am proud of our listeners. Now friendly. Friendly means nice to people, like a friend. Our neighbors are very friendly.

Maya

Friendly people say hello and smile. A friendly dog makes everyone happy. It is easy to talk to friendly people.

Lena

Next, honest. Honest means always telling the truth. Be honest and tell the truth. Honest people do not lie.

Maya

An honest answer builds trust. Honest friends are the best friends. It takes a brave heart to be honest.

Lena

Our ninth word is patient. Patient means waiting calmly without getting angry. Be patient and wait for your turn.

Maya

Learning English takes time, so be patient with yourself. A patient teacher never shouts. Patient people stay calm in a bad mood.

Lena

And our last word is mood. Mood means the way you feel inside, happy or sad. Good music can change my mood.

Maya

My mood is better in the morning. A bad mood can change with a kind word. What is your mood today, Lena?

Lena

My mood is happy, because we are learning together. Happy, sad, kind, brave, shy, proud, friendly, honest, patient, mood.

Maya

Great review. Let us say them in sentences. A happy person smiles a lot. A sad movie can make you cry. A kind teacher helps everyone. A brave nurse works all night. A shy student learns to speak. A proud father watches his son. A friendly shopkeeper greets you. An honest worker tells the truth. A patient driver waits calmly. A good mood makes the day better.

Lena

Wonderful. Try to use these words today. Tell a friend you are happy. Be kind and friendly. Be honest and patient. Be brave, even when you feel shy. And stay proud of yourself.

Lena

Let us play a quick game before we finish. I say a sentence, you think of the word. A person who helps an old woman cross the street is...

Maya

Kind. Easy.

Lena

A child who is not afraid of the dark is...

Maya

Brave. Very good.

Lena

A man who always tells the truth, even when it is hard, is...

Maya

Honest.

Lena

A woman who waits calmly in a long line is...

Maya

Patient. I see what you are doing.

Lena

The feeling when your team wins the final game is...

Maya

Happy. And the feeling when it rains on your birthday party is...

Lena

Sad. You win, Maya.

Maya

Now listeners, your turn. Think of one person you know. Is that person friendly or shy? Are you proud of someone today? Tell them how you feel. Use the words, and keep practicing.

Lena

Good idea. A small step every day changes your mood for the better.

Maya

That is all for today. Join us next time on Word Kitchen. Bye everyone.

πŸ“Grammar: Present perfect + for / since, present perfect continuous

We use **have been, has been** (present perfect) with **for** and **since** for things that started in the past and are still true now. She has been a **kind** nurse since last year. **For** is a period of time: for two years, for three days. **Since** is a start point: since Monday, since twenty twenty. Ask **How long have you been proud of her?** to ask about an unfinished time. The present perfect continuous is **have been + verb-ing**: I have been learning. We use it for actions that started in the past and are still true now. He has been **patient** since the morning.
