Maya

Hello and welcome to Word Kitchen. I am Maya.

Lena

And I am Lena. Today we talk about school things.

Maya

Yes, five small words: book, pen, pencil, notebook, and bag. These words live in every classroom.

Lena

Let us start with book. A book has pages. You read a book. I read a book every morning with tea.

Maya

Nice. I read a book before bed. A good book is my friend. Yesterday I bought a new book at the shop. It is a small book, only one hundred pages.

Lena

One hundred pages. That is a real book.

Maya

Now pen. A pen is for writing. I write with a blue pen. Lena, what color is your pen?

Lena

My pen is black. I always have a pen in my pocket. At work, I use a pen all day. Yesterday my pen ran out of ink, so I bought a new pen.

Maya

That happens to me too. Now pencil. A pencil is also for writing, but with a pencil you can erase. I draw with a pencil. A short pencil is in my bag right now.

Lena

You carry a pencil in your bag?

Maya

Yes. My bag is full of school things. My bag has a book, a pen, and a pencil. Look, this is my bag. It is a big red bag.

Lena

My bag is small. My bag is blue. In my bag I have one notebook. A notebook has clean white pages. You write in a notebook. I write my ideas in a notebook.

Maya

Same here. I have a new notebook. I open my notebook and write a new word in it. This notebook is green. My old notebook is full.

Lena

Let us review the five words. Book. Pen. Pencil. Notebook. Bag.

Maya

Good idea. Repeat after us. Book. I love my book. Pen. I need a pen. Pencil. A yellow pencil. Notebook. My notebook. Bag. My bag.

Lena

Now a small story. Every morning I take my bag. I put my book in the bag. I put my pen in the bag. I put my pencil in the bag. And my notebook goes in the bag too.

Maya

Your bag sounds heavy.

Lena

A little. But I am ready for school. At school I open my book. I read one page. Then I take my pen. I write in my notebook. The teacher speaks, and I write fast.

Maya

And your pencil?

Lena

With my pencil I draw a small house. The house has a door and a window. The teacher smiles.

Maya

That is lovely. So today: a book for reading, a pen for writing, a pencil for drawing, a notebook for your ideas, and a bag to carry them all.

Lena

Here is your homework. Take your bag. Put a book in it. Put a pen in it. Put a pencil in it. Put your notebook in it. Then say the words out loud: book, pen, pencil, notebook, bag.

Maya

One more tip. Write the words in your notebook. Book. Pen. Pencil. Notebook. Bag. Your notebook is your best teacher.

Lena

And put that notebook in your bag. Then your bag has everything you need.

Maya

Say them three times. Book, pen, pencil, notebook, bag. Book, pen, pencil, notebook, bag.

Lena

You did great. Next time we learn five new words.

Maya

See you in the kitchen. Bye.

πŸ“Grammar: Past habits - used to

We use **used to** for things we did a lot in the past. We do not do them now. The form is simple: I **used to** + verb. For example: I **used to** play football. For the negative, we say **didn't use to**. Careful: no 'd' in 'use' after 'didn't'. For questions, we say **Did you use to** + verb? For example: **Did you use to** read books?
