Maya

Hi, Lena! Welcome back to Word Kitchen!

Lena

Hi, Maya! I am so hungry today. Are we cooking?

Maya

Yes! Today we talk about food and cooking. It will be delicious.

Lena

I hope so. I love food that is delicious.

Maya

Me too. Let us start in the kitchen. My kitchen is small, but I love my kitchen.

Lena

My kitchen is small too. What is our first word today?

Maya

Our first word is sweet. Sweet! I love sweet food.

Lena

I love sweet food too. Chocolate cake is sweet. And this tea? Is it sweet?

Maya

No, this tea is not sweet. It is a little sour. Do you want something sweet?

Lena

Yes! Maybe a sweet apple? Apples can be sweet.

Maya

Good idea. Here is a sweet red apple. Now, our next word is snack. A snack is a small food between meals.

Lena

Oh, I eat a snack every afternoon. My favorite snack is fruit.

Maya

Fruit is a good snack. Yesterday I had a snack at four o'clock in the afternoon: a small piece of cheese.

Lena

A snack is perfect when you are hungry but dinner is far away. So, what do we cook now?

Maya

We make soup! Soup is easy and warm. The word soup is perfect for today.

Lena

I love soup. My mom makes delicious soup. Her soup is always delicious.

Maya

My soup is delicious too! At least I think so. A delicious soup needs good vegetables.

Lena

And what makes it delicious? Good salt, and cooking it slowly.

Maya

Yes. A delicious meal is simple. Delicious food does not need to be expensive.

Lena

True. Simple food can be delicious. Now tell me, do you like spicy food?

Maya

Oh, the word spicy! I like spicy food very much. A little spicy soup is wonderful.

Lena

I cannot eat very spicy food. Spicy food makes my mouth burn!

Maya

Really? I love spicy curry. Spicy noodles are my favorite. But not too spicy, okay?

Lena

Okay, we will make the soup a little spicy, not very spicy. Deal.

Maya

Deal. Now, the next word is fresh. We need fresh vegetables for our soup.

Lena

Fresh vegetables are important. Old vegetables are not good. Fresh food tastes better.

Maya

Yes, I buy fresh bread every morning, and fresh fruit every week. Fresh is always better.

Lena

Let us cut the vegetables. Where is the knife? In the kitchen, right?

Maya

In my kitchen, everything is close. My kitchen has a big table and a small oven.

Lena

Oh, the oven! The word oven. Do we need the oven for soup?

Maya

Not for soup, but I want to make bread in the oven. The oven is hot now.

Lena

Be careful with the oven. The oven is very hot. Put the bread in the oven and wait.

Maya

The bread is in the oven now. In twenty minutes it will be ready. The oven smells wonderful.

Lena

While we wait, tell me about the word grill. Do you grill food?

Maya

Yes! In summer I grill fish and vegetables. Food from the grill is delicious.

Lena

I grill chicken sometimes. To grill is to cook over fire. Grill is a fun word.

Maya

My father loves to grill. He says food from the grill tastes special. Do you want to grill tomorrow?

Lena

Maybe. Today the soup is enough. Now, what about dessert? The word dessert!

Maya

Dessert! I love dessert. After a meal, I always want a small dessert.

Lena

What is your favorite dessert? My favorite dessert is ice cream.

Maya

My favorite dessert is chocolate cake. A sweet dessert makes me happy.

Lena

Today our dessert is simple: fresh fruit. A fresh dessert is healthy.

Maya

Healthy and sweet! Fruit is a sweet dessert. Perfect.

Lena

Let us look at the soup. Is it ready? It smells delicious!

Maya

Yes! The soup is ready. Let us eat. This soup is delicious.

Lena

It is delicious! A little spicy, very warm, and delicious. You are a great cook!

Maya

Thank you! And the bread from the oven is ready too. Fresh bread from the oven!

Lena

This is a perfect meal. A delicious soup, fresh bread, and a sweet dessert.

Maya

Let us remember our ten words. Say them with me: delicious, spicy, oven, snack, sweet, kitchen, dessert, fresh, grill, soup.

Lena

delicious, spicy, oven, snack, sweet, kitchen, dessert, fresh, grill, soup. I know them all now!

Maya

Great! Practice these words when you cook in your kitchen. See you next time on Word Kitchen!

Lena

Bye, everyone! Happy cooking!

πŸ“Grammar: Past tenses - simple, continuous, perfect

**Past simple** is for finished actions in the past. *I cooked a delicious soup yesterday.* The action finished yesterday. **Past continuous** is for an action in progress at a past time. *I was cooking soup at seven o'clock.* At that time, the action was still happening. We often use them together. *I was cooking soup when my friend called.* The long action **was cooking** was interrupted by the short action **called**. **Past perfect** (**had** + past participle) is for the earlier of two past actions. *When I arrived, they had eaten the sweet dessert.* They ate it before I arrived.
