**CAN** is present or future ability, simple and direct: I **can** spot a deepfake after one viewing. It also covers general possibility: technology **can** surprise us all.
**COULD** is the past of **can** for general ability: early phones **could** barely hold a charge. It also softens a present or future possibility: the singularity **could** arrive quietly, through updates.
For everything **can** and **could** cannot do β perfect forms, infinitives, gerunds β use **BE ABLE TO**. I'd love to **be able to** explain that black box. She has **been able to** resist datafication so far.
