We use the third conditional to imagine a different past. The past is real, but we dream about another result. The form is simple: **If + past, would have + past participle**. The if-part shows the imaginary past. The **would have** part shows the imaginary result. Imagine yesterday: I saw an expensive watch, but I did not buy it.
