Listen to todayβs conversation.
Hi everyone, and welcome to Word Kitchen. I am Maya.
And I am Lena. Today we are talking about travel and transport.
Yes. Ten useful words for your next trip. Let's start at the airport.
Oh, I love the airport. When you go to the airport, what do you do first?
First, I check the big screens at the airport to find my flight.
A flight is a trip in a plane. My last flight was very comfortable.
Mine too. But my flight was late. The flight had a delay of one hour.
A delay is so annoying. When a flight has a delay, what do you do at the airport?
I drink coffee at the airport and look at my schedule.
A schedule shows when things happen. I always check my schedule before a trip.
Good idea. Before my trip, I check the schedule for the bus and the subway.
The subway is perfect for a trip in the city. Do you take the subway to the airport?
Yes. The subway to the airport is fast, and a subway trip is cheap.
Every passenger likes a cheap trip. A passenger is a person who travels but does not drive.
Right. On the subway, every passenger has a seat. The subway driver was very friendly.
The driver? There is a driver on the subway?
Yes, the subway driver drives the train. A driver is a person who drives.
I see. On my last trip, I met a nice bus driver. The bus driver helped every passenger with a bag.
Drivers are important on every trip. My taxi driver knows the airport very well.
So a good driver can save your trip. Did the driver get you to the airport on time?
Yes. I asked the driver to hurry, and we arrived at the airport before the delay started.
Great. Now, what about the ferry? A ferry is a boat for people and cars.
I love the ferry. On my summer trip, I took a ferry to a small island.
The ferry trip sounds nice. Was the ferry fast?
The ferry was slow, but every passenger on the ferry had a great view.
A ferry trip with a view. Nice. Did you reserve your ferry seat?
Yes, I like to reserve. To reserve means to book something for later.
I always reserve my flight early. When you reserve a flight, you get a better price.
True. Last year I did not reserve my hotel, and my trip was a mess.
So you should always reserve before a trip. Do you reserve your taxi driver too?
Sometimes. I can reserve a taxi, and the driver waits for me at the airport.
That is smart. Let us review the schedule word again. A schedule helps every passenger.
Yes. I check the flight schedule on my phone. If the schedule says delay, I know my trip will start late.
And if there is a delay, the passenger must wait. I hate waiting for a ferry with a delay.
Me too. But the ferry driver always tells every passenger about the delay.
Ha, the ferry driver. Let us do a quick test. Maya, what does schedule mean?
A schedule is a plan that shows when things happen. Like a train schedule or a flight schedule.
And passenger?
A passenger is a person who travels but does not drive. The taxi driver drives, and I am the passenger.
And reserve?
To reserve is to book something for later. You can reserve a flight, a ferry seat, or a taxi.
And driver?
A driver is a person who drives. A taxi driver, a bus driver, a subway driver.
And ferry?
A ferry is a boat that carries people and cars across water.
And delay?
A delay is when something starts later than planned. A one hour delay is bad.
And airport?
An airport is where planes land and take off.
And subway?
A subway is a train that runs under the ground in a city.
And flight?
A flight is a trip in a plane.
And trip?
A trip is a short journey to a place and back.
Perfect. So before your next trip, check the schedule, go to the airport early, and enjoy your flight.
And if there is a delay, smile. Every passenger will share your delay.
And do not forget to reserve. A good driver and a good ferry make every trip better.

We use the **present simple** for things that are always true, or that happen again and again. The taxi driver takes passengers to the airport every day. With he, she, and it, the verb changes its spelling: lives, studies, goes. A good schedule helps every driver. Words like **always**, **usually**, and **never** go before the main verb, but after the verb **be**. The ferry is usually fast. We use the **present continuous** for actions happening right now, at this moment. I am waiting for my flight at the airport. We also use the **present continuous** for temporary situations and for plan
